Welcome Home! Nelson Mandela Discharged From The Hospital!

nelson mandela 2010

We were definitely concerned that we were witnessing Mandela’s last days, but we’re glad that he’s made a recovery.

Former South African President Nelson Mandela went home from the hospital Friday after suffering an acute respiratory infection. Officials said the 92-year-old was joking with his wife and nurses, and handling the difficulties of old age “with the greatest of grace.”

Surgeon-General Vejaynand Ramlakan told reporters that the anti-apartheid icon would now receive care at home after about 48 hours in Johannesburg’s Milpark Hospital.

“It comes to us this afternoon with great joy to hear that he’s been discharged,” grandson Mandla Mandela told reporters at a hospital news conference that included Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe. Soon afterward, a convoy of security vehicles and a military ambulance carrying Mandela left the hospital, reaching his nearby home in minutes.

A dearth of updates since Mandela was admitted Wednesday afternoon had led to speculation and concern about his condition. Journalists have been camped outside the hospital and outside his Johannesburg home. Officials said Friday that Mandela’s office has received more than 10,000 messages of support and well wishes, including from President Barack Obama.

Keep on pushin’ good brotha, we need your inspiration and wisdom in these trying times throughout the world.

Minnesota Vikings defensive end Everson Griffen was on the wrong side of a taser today — after the NFLer allegedly assaulted a cop in L.A. — and it’s his second arrest in three days … TMZ has learned. Law enforcement sources tell us LAPD pulled over Griffen — a USC grad — around 4 PM Monday near the Trojan campus … and he failed to produce ID.

That’s when we’re told the 6’3?, 275-pounder tried to take off on foot — and allegedly assaulted an officer in the process. Sources say cops were forced to take Griffen down with a taser — and then arrested him on one count of felony battery. TMZ has learned Griffen was also arrested just this past Friday night in Hollywood … and booked for being drunk in public. He was released on Saturday.

Eminem To Star In Million Dollar Claymation Superbowl Commercial

Eminem Recovery Grammy

After releasing a triple-platinum album marking his official comeback from a long stint with drugs and rehab, Marshall Mathers will now star in his 1st ever Superbowl commercial.

This Sunday’s Super Bowl is getting a dose of Eminem. A week before the Detroit rapper takes on the Grammy Awards, he is set to appear in a Claymation advertisement for Lipton Brisk iced tea, slated to air during a commercial break during the game.

The Claymation series, which has previously featured rocker Ozzy Osbourne and Frank Sinatra, cost more than $1 million to shoot, and will take viewers inside a day in the life of the controversial rapper. Though not much else has been revealed about the expensive spot, insiders claim that the clip is “very funny.” Fans can catch the ad when it airs during the game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and Green Bay Packers on Feb. 6.

Superbowl commercials are always pretty good, but THIS should be epic! Em has always been good for bringing the funny whenever he makes an appearance outside the booth.

Case Study: The Best and the Worst Hip-Hop Inspired Marketing Campaigns

As hip-hop became the soundtrack for a younger generation, companies took notice and have been utilizing hip-hop’s prime players to endorse their products in the hopes of reaching those younger and potential consumers. Mike Street, senior digital strategist for Syndicate Media Group, a communications and marketing agency, explains that in order for a company to have a successful marketing campaign featuring hip-hop artists, brand managers must find an artist who is aligned with the culture and mission of the product. “If the artist doesn’t even really use the product or have a passion for the product, consumers will see right through it and it will be money wasted,” he said.

Ho Sit Down: Ohio Governor Says He Doesn’t “Need Black People”

An Ohio lawmaker is accusing the state’s new governor of saying he doesn’t “need” African-Americans. “I don’t need your people,” state Sen. Nina Turner said Republican Gov. John Kasich told her when she offered her help in building a racially diverse cabinet. All 22 of Kasich’s appointees since he took office Jan. 10 have been white, and only five are female. Turner, who is black and a Democrat, said on Thursday that she was “kind of perplexed” by Kasich’s comment. “ I wasn’t quite sure whether or not he was referring to my ethnic group people or ‘my people’ as in the 350,000 constituents I serve in this state that represent all ethnic groups, all religious groups,” she said. “I didn’t understand what ‘I’m not going to hire your people’ means.”

But Turner said she thinks it has something to do with race. “Today, in 2011, it feels more like 1811 in the state of Ohio under a governor who just does not get it,” she said. Kasich spokesman Rob Nichols confirmed to POLITICO that the governor did tell Turner he didn’t need her “people,” but said he meant it in an entirely partisan way. “What he meant was, ‘Your people are Democrats, we don’t need them on our cabinet,’” Nichols said. “He said it referring to partisan Democrats who don’t agree with reducing taxes and reducing spending.”

Kasich had not yet appointed any African-Americans to his cabinet, but that’s not for lack of trying, Nichols said. “We have reached out to two African-Americans for two different cabinet-level positions, and they passed on the opportunity.” But Turner is dissatisfied with Kasich’s efforts. “Through his actions and deeds, Gov. Kasich has declared that Ohio is open for business, but if you are African-American, you need not apply,” she said.

Turner and the Ohio Legislative Black Caucus are “demanding” a meeting with Kasich, the group’s president, state Rep. Sandra Williams, told The Columbus Dispatch. The group has set up an e-mail address to which qualified minority applicants can send their resumes. “We will take those resumes — walk those resumes over to our governor to let him know that there are qualified people of color in this state, and we are demanding employment,” Williams said Thursday.

Nichols said that Kasich welcomes job applicants but will not choose candidates based on their race. “Diversity is something we will seek and something we will work toward, but it’s not more important than finding people who share the governor’s positions,” he said.
